Henshall ON-yomi-ONLY sorted

Today I added 2 CSV files (comma-separated fields) of the Henshall ON-yomi-ONLY kanji per KANJIDIC2 of edrg.org entries.

One file is sorted by Unicode value (the character, as this is a UTF-8 file) and one by the Henshall ID.

The fields are kanji, UCS, ID, ON-yomi, meanings (as found in kanjidic2 ; up to 14.)

An example (note ·  used to separate ON-yomi ) :

不,4E0D,572,フ·ブ,negative,non-,bad,ugly,clumsy,,,,,,,

Henshall versus kanjidic2

Henshall gives 貝 as かい but jisho.org and such give

貝 バイ  かい shellfish

which I think of as English "buy" with French "caille".

The Kanji Learner's course also has only the hiragana, which makes sense, because the common words and expressions are built with かい.

However バイ is what you find in the name of 貝 as radical 154.

Henshall ON-yomi-ONLY kanji

I have placed 2 CSV files on the kanji.aule-browser.com site.

One has 366 Kanji from the Henshall 1946 kanji : these 366 only have an ON-yomi given in kanjidic2 from edrdg.org and are listed with their Henshall index, UNICODE value, ON-yomi and meanings.

There is the one oddity : for 'fence' which is given as kokuji but has no kun-yomi.

There is a separate file with the few kokuji with ONLY a kun-yomi that are are found in Henshall according to kanjidic2.

I will do a spot check on these as I have my edition of Henshall indexed for these.

kanjidic2 scrolling kanji viewer take 2

The scrolling Curl viewer for kanjidic2 kanji (index, kanji,English transl) has been restored at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-all-indexed-curl.html

Use the find field or click in the app and then CTRL-F to search. The alternate mouse button (for me that is the left button) will bring up a context menu if you select text in the app.

I will add an async view with much more content as time and energy permit ( it will load in chunks of content in the background as well jump forward to retrieve and then display a "page" of content.)

At the moment the app does not remember where you were on a past visit.

To clear the app from memory, use the Curl control panel app view button (bottom right on that panel.)

The Curl browser plugin is at www.curl.com or www.curlap.com (Nihongo site.)

If you want this as a desktop or mobile app let me know (linux, mac or any Windows; Android or iOS.)

kanjidic2 Japanese

I have revised my snapshot of the kanji with a Japanese reading in kanjidic2 as you can see at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-all-revised.html.

This will result in some changes in other plain HTML kanji pages and in several Curl web and desktop app's as well. The present list is 12,335 characters extracted from the XML – IFF they have at least one ON- or KUN-reading.

The error arose from a missing character in some pages and edict2 app's. This is not as common a character as the top 3,000 or so - but it is in the English wiktionary at http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/暝#Japanese.

kanji by UCS

Here are some the the first, basic Japanese kanji sorted by their UCS value (UTF-16 codepoint)

一  丁  七  万  丈  三  上  下  不  与  世  丘  丙  両  並  中  丸  丹  主  久  乏  乗  乙  九  乱  乳  乾  事  二  亜  享  京  亭  人  仁  今

Is a particular pattern evident or helpful ?

I am in the process of adding a UCS - to- kanji -to- urlencoded - utf-8 page over at kanji.aule-browser.com which uses the Curl web content language (only a few lines of declarative script and a wee bit of procedural script required.)

UPDATE : that page with the HTML urlencoding for each character is at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/henshall-sorted-urlencoded.html .

A simpler plain HTML page is http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/henshall-sorted-by-unicode.html .

Another safe, plain HTML page with no scripts, images, ads or other nuisance has the 1,945 Hernshall basic Japanese kanji sorted as they appear in the book - by their so-called Henshall number - is at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/henshall-sorted-by-id.html.

By viewing the page source in your browser you can see that there are no script or image elements to worry about - so you can safely copy this HTML text to your local machine to edit as you see fit.

The HTML text was generating using a Curl applet running off-line and parsing the Kanjidic2 XML.

file walker

The spin control now walks the 9 files in order as the sort imposed by the SpinControl is defeated by using a format spec to take the spin values as indices into a jōyō char array.

You can now go through about 200 characters before another file loads.

The font sizes have also been revised up for the spin control and the character entry field. But still only Beta 9.0.9 as a few quirks remain in the search algorithm for double-kanji expressions.

This Curl web content page displays the edict2 Japanese-English kanji dictionary by traversing 9 files using light-weight objectsand no database. It requires the Surge RTE browser plugin from www.curl.com

kanjidic2 spinner

I have added a page with 12,300+ Japanese Kanji from kanjidic2 loaded into a spin control.

You can see the widget between the text field and the definitions button in this screenshot:

Logic to link the file to open for that character should follow in due course.

In the image you are seeing the characters in a free Hanazono font called HanaMinA.

kanji SpinControl

I have added two kanji Spin widgets or SpinControl's at the HTML+Curl edict2 Japanese-English dictionary views page.

You can see them at the top in this screenprint:

The first spinner is for the jōyō kanji and the second holds the kanjidic2 kanji with a "frequency" value. The latter can be seen in the Curl app at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-freq-curl.html.

Some of these pages will soon appear as Android and iOS app's thanks to the Curl CAEDE project.

Kanjidic2 Edict2

Any one of these kanjidic2 characters followed by an '*' character will give the most direct access to the edict2 dictionary view at kanji.aule-browser.com.

Here is a snap of the top of the HTML page of the Kanjidic2 characters:

Recognizing Kanji

I find that the Henshall page a kanji.aule-browser.com works well with the Beta 9.05 dictionary page.

Once I recognize the kanji on the first page, I can see the double character expressions in Edict2 on the second page.

These 9 kanji, taken in order descending the Henshall page, will traverse the Edct2 dictionary:

    意    観      好    昭      情      送      到      貿       礼

The Henshall kanji page begins as follows:

and the second, the dictionary, follows in order as:

The dictionary look-up does require the RTE browser plugin from Tokyo's SCSK Corp at curl.com.

There will soon be pages linking directly into the dictionary just as I now have pages linked into  wiktionary.org.

Those pages will start as Henshall, Heisig, Jōyō and Tuttle kanji sets.

kanji buttons

There are a few Japanese kanji on the buttons of the beta 0.903 of the Double-Kanji dictionary at kanji.aule-browser.com.

Here is a screenshot with the new NAV buttons:

A new filter option will add expressions that are two Kanji plus a single Katakana or Hiragana character.

In a few days the new UI and functionality will be the full dictionary with Katakana and Hiragana (simply without the double-character filter selected.)

The last feature is about two days away: browsing each item with details in a larger format.

compound kanji definitions

A dictionary popup is now part of my Curl® Japanese haiku pages: ( link)

Single kanji definitions are drawn from kanjidic2 and compound kanji from a set of 9 Curl binary selections from edict2.  At the moment only compounds at the beginning of an entry are found (those forming the initial characters of an expression.)  For our purposes, the full set of 162,000+ entries has been resuced to roughly 122,000.

Dictionaries are not loaded unless needed and that need is determined by membership of kanji in Char Set's ( in Curl, a CharClass) which, incidentally, has a {fold } expression available.
