At 975 characters left in the file (fewer than 40 rows of 25), it is time to consider removing those kanji that are neither frequent in use nor rated 'general use'. But that requires a software script ... or an app !

The duplicate kanji are VERY visible now. 

府 is one example in the row

In the almost 40 rows above it, occurs 33 times. Run through the lines again. Do you start to see them ? Try separating the lines with a blank line. Try shortening the lines.

You could first remove all '\n' linefeeds, and then use a regexp such as

FIND  expression :   (..........)
REPLACE expr:     \1\n

which in Notepad++ will give almost 100 rows of 10 characters for the file above. It says "for every 10 characters, return that selection followed by a linefeed."

The one ( 1 ) in the case above refers to the first expression in parentheses.  If we'd had a second, it would have been \2.

What features make complex kanji appear to be the same ? Are some easily confused if not next to each other ?

Funny, but when I read 鳥鳥 side-by-side I just KNOW that is not horse ! But seen alone, I can be unsure ... horse or bird ? Crow ?

250 Essential Kanji for Everyday Use, Bk1

Book 1 of the Tuttle series "250 Essential Kanji" has the oddity ( in my edition ) of not only having no Unicode value for a kanji but also no Tuttle flashcard number.

Take page 121, for example.

The kanji are entries 139, 140 and 141.

These are 証 確 and 認 .

Their Tuttle flashcard numbers are 754, 805 and 978.

If you are interested in an Android app to accompany the book, drop a note at info AT aule-browser.com and I'll convert some Curl RIA desktop code into Curl CAEDE code and we'll have that app.

The app would show you that these kanji are

証  ショウ / あかし  8A3C
確  カク·コウ / たし.か·たし.かめる  78BA

If you know the 4-character Unicode utf-16 value then I have a simple app that gives you a version of that kanji that you can then cut-n-paste into a web page, a URL address or a Word document – or into a Find field in a Japanese page that is encoded in EUC or Shift or which ever JIS or other encoding is confounding your search. One ring of code to bind them all.

Btw, their Kodansha Essential Kanji entries are 1672, 1409 and 1690.

And which two of the above kanji form the verb kakuninsuru ?  Sooo desu ne !

kanjidic2 scrolling kanji viewer take 2

The scrolling Curl viewer for kanjidic2 kanji (index,kanji,English transl) has been restored at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-all-indexed-curl.html

Use the find field or click in the app and then CTRL-F to search. The alternate mouse button (for me that is the left button) will bring up a context menu if you select text in the app.

I will add an async view with much more content as time and energy permit ( it will load in chunks of content in the background as well jump forward to retrieve and then display a "page" of content.)

At the moment the app does not remember where you were on a past visit.

To clear the app from memory, use the Curl control panel app view button (bottom right on that panel.)

learn kanji software

Inter-relating kanji with Japanese syntax and conversational pragmatics is not so obvious in flashcard server software and mobile app as you might think.

Client-side Curl is not the hard part : looking at Mercury for Erlang on the server-side ( as there is no SOUL for Pharo Smalltalk.)

Android kanji app

Good Character app offers phonetic search : kanji with a kunyomi starting with "re", for example. Easy as the search accepts romaji characters for the mora.
