At 975 characters left in the file (fewer than 40 rows of 25), it is time to consider removing those kanji that are neither frequent in use nor rated 'general use'. But that requires a software script ... or an app !

In the almost 40 rows above it, occurs 33 times. Run through the lines again. Do you start to see them ? Try separating the lines with a blank line. Try shortening the lines.

You could first remove all '\n' linefeeds, and then use a regexp such as

FIND  expression :   (..........)
REPLACE expr:     \1\n

which in Notepad++ will give almost 100 rows of 10 characters for the file above. It says "for every 10 characters, return that selection followed by a linefeed."

The one ( 1 ) in the case above refers to the first expression in parentheses.  If we'd had a second, it would have been \2.

What features make complex kanji appear to be the same ? Are some easily confused if not next to each other ?

Funny, but when I read 鳥鳥 side-by-side I just KNOW that is not horse ! But seen alone, I can be unsure ... horse or bird ? Crow ?

This is not intended as any criticism of Conning's 2013 Kanji Learner's Course : his 2,300 kanji should be viewed as a selection from the larger 2nd ed. of  Halpern's Kanji Learner's Dictionary. But it is a good indication that something on the order of 3 to even 5 thousand kanji are needed to read literary Japanese with 3000 a likely minimum for literacy beyond the daily news.

These 54 kanji found in Bashō's 奥の細道 or Oku no hosomichi [ONH] are not found in KLC* but can be found in the 2,500 MFNK or "most frequent newspaper kanji" used by jisho.org, edrg and others.  The new Halpern KLD 2nd ed uses a set of 3,000 but on the web perhaps these can be found more readily as the K2500 :

Values of R000 above ( a total of 26 ) indicate that the kanji was not found in the book Les 500 Kanji.  One should note that a Japanese newspaper is more likely to have mention of politics and military matters than an introductory reader.

kanji over the moon

 
The 100+ Basho haiku mentioning "moon" involve only 376 kanji - and only 45 of those are not in top 3k+ so some reading can be done with a command of only about 500 kanji  — if the compound kanji words formed with some of those 376 are not too obscure or place names ( checked using the Wakan clipboard tool and one of my Basho CURL web pages which also give the poems in hiragana and romaji text. )

The first 8 of the haiku on the "moon" page at kanji.aule-browser.com involve 36 kanji of which only 1 is not "common" in Japanese newspapers : "snoring" !

A trivial number of differences are due to R et R starting with the first ten numbers from 1 to 10. But each R000 above (a total of 7) is a kanji not found in Les 500 Kanji but listed as one of the top 100 newspaper kanji.

frequent kanji

The HTML+Curl spin control widget for frequently encountered Japanese kanji now indicates the HTML page to check for expressions using that kanji (if it is a jōyō character in our Unicode joyo CharClass.)

I have added indexing to the HTML+Curl page for edict2 kanji when selecting a JOYO kanji at the HTML+Curl home for the Plain HTML pages for viewing the edict2 Japanese-English dictionary. The first widget is in file order (1 to 9), the second in UCS order and the third is yet to be modified (frequent kanji.)

Select the page by clicking on the HTML+Curl link if you have the Surge RTE browser plugin installed (available at www.curl.com ).

It still requires a tweak when viewed on a small screen.  That should not an issue when generated as an Android or iOS app using Curl's CAEDE framework.
