Unicode radicals for kanji 部首 ぶしゅ ブシュ

Wikipedia has a page of Unicode values for radicals.

But they have ⼿ for the tehen bushū or 部首 (ぶしゅ) when I am looking for the left-side component of Henshall 682 "pick up", i.e.,  採 (サイ / と.る) which is 扌.

Another article says 扌 was added later as a "redundant semantic determinative."

Two-kanji Japanese terms

The actual title of these useful wiktionary pages is Japanese terms written with two Han script characters. Each entry is a link to a wiktionary lexicon entry.

I am thinking of writing a Rebol or Curl ( Curl, not cURL ) script to make these pages accept persistent annotations for mnemonics - and perhaps also user links.

Regardless, they are very useful: each page is 200 out of 13,473 ( I think that I will make that limit a user configuration item.)

Good Character app offers phonetic search : kanji with a kunyomi starting with "re", for example. Easy as the search accepts romaji characters for the mora.

kanjidic2 Japanese

I have revised my snapshot of the kanji with a Japanese reading in kanjidic2 as you can see at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-all-revised.html.

This will result in some changes in other plain HTML kanji pages and in several Curl web and desktop app's as well. The present list is 12,335 characters extracted from the XML – IFF they have at least one ON- or KUN-reading.

The error arose from a missing 暝 character in some pages and edict2 app's. This is not as common a character as the top 3,000 or so - but it is in the English wiktionary at http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/暝#Japanese.

Here is a screenshot as the kanji mnemonics 'Mansion' applet begins to take shape in the Pale Moon 64-bit browser : jpg image-only.

The kanji to either side are Label objects on ReactiveLabel objects so that a click will give you access to information - can you see at a glance which match our mnemonic panels ?

Using the interior of architecture is the classic approach since at least the Greeks and Romans - but for that we may have to wait for Google Interiors. I may be able to get permission to do a set in the interior of Government House - those might be a rather 'honorific' set of characters.

mahou bushu

The mahou.org radical select page for viewing kanji by bushu has proven more useful than I expected.

The 214 bushu page found at about.com is also useful, but rather different.  For example, at mahou.org I am able to treat take (bamboo) as a radical.

There is a terrific bushu page at denshi jisho which also allows multiple component radicals to be selected when looking for kanji. Once you have a set of results, you can click on each or mouse-over (if you have the Perapera dictionary plugin enabled - or a similar add-on.)

One of the poems in the Hyakunin Isshu has the kanji 苫 for toma or woven mat [Emperor Tenchi on the autumn hut or かりほ at the rice paddy.] One thing that I have not yet solved for my Curl views of the kanji in the edict2 Japanese-English dictionary is how to find a cognate kanji or a kanji with the same kun reading such as 篷. The latter has the take radical for bamboo and the former has that for grass, kusa  くさ. Using the correct kanji better preserves access to the intended meaning (so much for relying on romaji renditions such as hopelessly ambiguous to+ma.)

note: 葦 or reed is pronounced あし or ashi as in leg/foot/legs/feet.

There are useful bushu pages at wikipedia and at about.com - both can help when forming your own mnemonic in keeping with your preferred variant(s) of the ars memoria.

Part 1 of the Concise Dictionary of Japanese Kanji Words and Expressions (CDJKWE ?) now has a visual contents section which can be searched and will form the CharClass for this segment for the search algorithm.

Work on the dictionary must stop in order to add Preferences so that users can set a font size preference.

A Japanese font can be problematic at, say 20pt, but very clear at 24pt depending on such things as TrueType settings.

I am getting good results using the free HanaMinA font from the Hanazono Project.

Preferences will be based on CSPD (client-side persistent data) - but I may offer browser cookies as an option ... ah, feature-creep, where would we get to without you ?

The HTML+Curl spin control widget for frequently encountered Japanese kanji now indicates the HTML page to check for expressions using that kanji (if it is a jōyō character in our Unicode joyo CharClass.)

compress order

I have corrected the edict2 HTML+Curl web page with a compress order for resizing which still permits up to six characters to be viewed in the entry field.  Here is a half-width example :

The caption to the left of the field is compressed, but the essentials remain intact. Here is the same page after a few taps on CTRL-minus to adjust the HTML portion :

Personally, I like this result.

joyo files

I have added indexing to the HTML+Curl page for edict2 kanji when selecting a JOYO kanji at the HTML+Curl home for the Plain HTML pages for viewing the edict2 Japanese-English dictionary. The first widget is in file order (1 to 9), the second in UCS order and the third is yet to be modified (frequent kanji.)

Select the page by clicking on the HTML+Curl link if you have the Surge RTE browser plugin installed (available at www.curl.com ).

It still requires a tweak when viewed on a small screen.  That should not an issue when generated as an Android or iOS app using Curl's CAEDE framework.

file walker

The spin control now walks the 9 files in order as the sort imposed by the SpinControl is defeated by using a format spec to take the spin values as indices into a jōyō char array.

You can now go through about 200 characters before another file loads.

The font sizes have also been revised up for the spin control and the character entry field. But still only Beta 9.0.9 as a few quirks remain in the search algorithm for double-kanji expressions.

This Curl web content page displays the edict2 Japanese-English kanji dictionary by traversing 9 files using light-weight objectsand no database. It requires the Surge RTE browser plugin from www.curl.com

kanjidic2 spinner

I have added a page with 12,300+ Japanese Kanji from kanjidic2 loaded into a spin control.

You can see the widget between the text field and the definitions button in this screenshot:

Logic to link the file to open for that character should follow in due course.

In the image you are seeing the characters in a free Hanazono font called HanaMinA.

kanji SpinControl

I have added two kanji Spin widgets or SpinControl's at the HTML+Curl edict2 Japanese-English dictionary views page.

You can see them at the top in this screenprint:

The first spinner is for the jōyō kanji and the second holds the kanjidic2 kanji with a "frequency" value. The latter can be seen in the Curl app at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-freq-curl.html.

Some of these pages will soon appear as Android and iOS app's thanks to the Curl CAEDE project.

joyo SpinControl

I have added a spin control with the jōyō kanji (upper-left to the right of the entry field.)

In a later version I will make this an option in the Preferences for users not working on their jōyō kanji.

Dictionary progress

I have added a progress bar widget to the bottom of the Kanji doubles dictionary view:

The shading spectrum varies as it loads the 9 files or crosses their boundaries in a search. I may yet add an in-line caption.

Desktop app: a Japanese-English dictionary

The desktop application version of my Kanji-Doubles view of the Japanese-English edict2 dictionary is now available for Windows, Mac and linux with iPad (iOS) and Android app's to follow soon. Any one of these kanjidic2 characters followed by an '*' character will give the most direct access to the edict2 dictionary view at kanji.aule-browser.com.

Recognizing Kanji

I find that the Henshall page a kanji.aule-browser.com works well with the Beta 9.05 dictionary page.

Once I recognize the kanji on the first page, I can see the double character expressions in Edict2 on the second page.

These 9 kanji, taken in order descending the Henshall page, will traverse the Edct2 dictionary:

The dictionary look-up does require the RTE browser plugin from Tokyo's SCSK Corp at curl.com.

There will soon be pages linking directly into the dictionary just as I now have pages linked into  wiktionary.org.

Those pages will start as Henshall, Heisig, Jōyō and Tuttle kanji sets.

kanji buttons

There are a few Japanese kanji on the buttons of the beta 0.903 of the Double-Kanji dictionary at kanji.aule-browser.com.

Here is a screenshot with the new NAV buttons:

A new filter option will add expressions that are two Kanji plus a single Katakana or Hiragana character.

In a few days the new UI and functionality will be the full dictionary with Katakana and Hiragana (simply without the double-character filter selected.)

The last feature is about two days away: browsing each item with details in a larger format.

Edict2 J-E Dictionary

The Curl version of Edict2 is now testing on-line and as a desktop app (where it is very fast.)

Today added wildcard behavior for single kanji ( 来*) and behavior to roll backwards through the dictionary (the aim is no to have the dictionary in memory and to use no indices.)

Here is a snapshot of how things look today after a search on 遠来 :

From the scroll bar you can see we have about one "page" loaded.

The button bottom left rolls in the previous 2000 entries. Tomorrow: partial matches logic.

Edict2 in plain HTML (no scripts, frames etc)

compound kanji definitions

A dictionary popup is now part of my Curl® Japanese haiku pages: (声 link)

Single kanji definitions are drawn from kanjidic2 and compound kanji from a set of 9 Curl binary selections from edict2.  At the moment only compounds at the beginning of an entry are found (those forming the initial characters of an expression.)  For our purposes, the full set of 162,000+ entries has been resuced to roughly 122,000.

Dictionaries are not loaded unless needed and that need is determined by membership of kanji in Char Set's ( in Curl, a CharClass) which, incidentally, has a {fold } expression available.

shi and gin, 詩吟, naku in Bashō 俳句

Shi 詩 is not found in Bashō haiku ?

Without shi, gin (吟) occurs only once in my collection of Bashō, yet the shi ( し ) mora is, of course, found repeatedly.

But naku (なく) is also to be found a few times. There is 鳴く and there is also the occurrence in

俤や姨ひとり泣く月の友

詠う or うたう are not present, but we do find 歌.

謳 is, of course, not found.
