Currently Google translate offers only 'British' in English for 英 and so that is all that can be given for other languages ( but even denshi jisho has anglais for French, but not britannique !)

Android kanji app

Good Character app offers phonetic search : kanji with a kunyomi starting with "re", for example. Easy as the search accepts romaji characters for the mora.

App with ON-YOMI kun-yomi

At kanji.aule-browser.com there is an improved app for the Henshall kanji (the original 1,945.)

This Japanese kanji study application is Curl software which runs in the browser and so requires the Curl plugin called the Surge RTE from www.curl.com

Henshall CSV

I have uploaded a CSV file (comma-separated) with the 1,945 kanji from the Henshall mnemonics book.

The file includes up to 12 meanings and the ON-YOMI and kun-yomi readings.

Note that the file has a 3-row header which you may wish to discard and replace with your own column names.

Is a particular pattern evident or helpful ?

I am in the process of adding a UCS - to- kanji -to- urlencoded - utf-8 page over at kanji.aule-browser.com which uses the Curl web content language (only a few lines of declarative script and a wee bit of procedural script required.)

Another safe, plain HTML page with no scripts, images, ads or other nuisance has the 1,945 Hernshall basic Japanese kanji sorted as they appear in the book - by their so-called Henshall number - is at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/henshall-sorted-by-id.html.

By viewing the page source in your browser you can see that there are no script or image elements to worry about - so you can safely copy this HTML text to your local machine to edit as you see fit.

The HTML text was generating using a Curl applet running off-line and parsing the Kanjidic2 XML.

mahou bushu

The mahou.org radical select page for viewing kanji by bushu has proven more useful than I expected.

The 214 bushu page found at about.com is also useful, but rather different.  For example, at mahou.org I am able to treat take (bamboo) as a radical.

There is a terrific bushu page at denshi jisho which also allows multiple component radicals to be selected when looking for kanji. Once you have a set of results, you can click on each or mouse-over (if you have the Perapera dictionary plugin enabled - or a similar add-on.)

font preferences

Work on the dictionary must stop in order to add Preferences so that users can set a font size preference.

A Japanese font can be problematic at, say 20pt, but very clear at 24pt depending on such things as TrueType settings.

I am getting good results using the free HanaMinA font from the Hanazono Project.

Preferences will be based on CSPD (client-side persistent data) - but I may offer browser cookies as an option ... ah, feature-creep, where would we get to without you ?

kanji notes

I have added the first notes widget to the Concise Dictionary of Kanji Words and Expressions.

The spin control now walks the 9 files in order as the sort imposed by the SpinControl is defeated by using a format spec to take the spin values as indices into a jōyō char array.

You can now go through about 200 characters before another file loads.

The font sizes have also been revised up for the spin control and the character entry field. But still only Beta 9.0.9 as a few quirks remain in the search algorithm for double-kanji expressions.

This Curl web content page displays the edict2 Japanese-English kanji dictionary by traversing 9 files using light-weight objectsand no database. It requires the Surge RTE browser plugin from www.curl.com

joyo SpinControl

I have added a spin control with the jōyō kanji (upper-left to the right of the entry field.)

In a later version I will make this an option in the Preferences for users not working on their jōyō kanji.

Desktop app: a Japanese-English dictionary

The desktop application version of my Kanji-Doubles view of the Japanese-English edict2 dictionary is now available for Windows, Mac and linux with iPad (iOS) and Android app's to follow soon. Recognizing Kanji

I find that the Henshall page a kanji.aule-browser.com works well with the Beta 9.05 dictionary page.

Once I recognize the kanji on the first page, I can see the double character expressions in Edict2 on the second page.

These 9 kanji, taken in order descending the Henshall page, will traverse the Edct2 dictionary:

The dictionary look-up does require the RTE browser plugin from Tokyo's SCSK Corp at curl.com.

There will soon be pages linking directly into the dictionary just as I now have pages linked into  wiktionary.org.

Those pages will start as Henshall, Heisig, Jōyō and Tuttle kanji sets.

kanji buttons

There are a few Japanese kanji on the buttons of the beta 0.903 of the Double-Kanji dictionary at kanji.aule-browser.com.

Here is a screenshot with the new NAV buttons:

A new filter option will add expressions that are two Kanji plus a single Katakana or Hiragana character.

In a few days the new UI and functionality will be the full dictionary with Katakana and Hiragana (simply without the double-character filter selected.)

The last feature is about two days away: browsing each item with details in a larger format.

Edict2 J-E Dictionary

The Curl version of Edict2 is now testing on-line and as a desktop app (where it is very fast.)

Today added wildcard behavior for single kanji ( 来*) and behavior to roll backwards through the dictionary (the aim is no to have the dictionary in memory and to use no indices.)

Here is a snapshot of how things look today after a search on 遠来 :

From the scroll bar you can see we have about one "page" loaded.

The button bottom left rolls in the previous 2000 entries. Tomorrow: partial matches logic.

Edict2 in plain HTML (no scripts, frames etc)

compound kanji definitions

A dictionary popup is now part of my Curl® Japanese haiku pages: (声 link)

Single kanji definitions are drawn from kanjidic2 and compound kanji from a set of 9 Curl binary selections from edict2.  At the moment only compounds at the beginning of an entry are found (those forming the initial characters of an expression.)  For our purposes, the full set of 162,000+ entries has been resuced to roughly 122,000.

Dictionaries are not loaded unless needed and that need is determined by membership of kanji in Char Set's ( in Curl, a CharClass) which, incidentally, has a {fold } expression available.
