kanji pairs study tip #1

Here is a kanji pairs study tip.

When pairing-up two kanji to form a mnemonic, take note of which of them tends to be in kanji compounds more often first and which more often last.

You may be surprised by what you discover about vocabulary that you want to retain.

And now you see something else that makes that pair natural to you in the order A - B rather than B - A.

Here is one of my examples :

250 Essential Kanji for Everyday Use, Bk1

Book 1 of the Tuttle series "250 Essential Kanji" has the oddity ( in my edition ) of not only having no Unicode value for a kanji but also no Tuttle flashcard number.

Take page 121, for example.

The kanji are entries 139, 140 and 141.

These are 証 確 and 認 .

Their Tuttle flashcard numbers are 754, 805 and 978.

If you are interested in an Android app to accompany the book, drop a note at info AT aule-browser.com and I'll convert some Curl RIA desktop code into Curl CAEDE code and we'll have that app.

The app would show you that these kanji are

証  ショウ / あかし  8A3C
確  カク·コウ / たし.か·たし.かめる  78BA
認  ニン / みと.める·したた.める  8A8D

If you know the 4-character Unicode utf-16 value then I have a simple app that gives you a version of that kanji that you can then cut-n-paste into a web page, a URL address or a Word document – or into a Find field in a Japanese page that is encoded in EUC or Shift or which ever JIS or other encoding is confounding your search. One ring of code to bind them all.

Btw, their Kodansha Essential Kanji entries are 1672, 1409 and 1690.

And which two of the above kanji form the verb kakuninsuru ?  Sooo desu ne !

kana kanji font フォント

I am searching diligently for a Japanese Unicode web font ( フォント ) with fine ( light or extra-light ) kana (hiragana, katakana and furigana) but strongly stroked kanji so that in a phrase with only few kanji, the effect will be one of the kanji characters standing out.

The alternative is to use extensive markup or to script based on the binary value of the characters.

What approach will I take for web languages which have string types or values, but no char type?

I have placed two Japanese kana chart images at aule-browser.com/nihongo :

which were both created using an easy to edit script in the Curl web content language ( formerly MIT Curl before being marketted by Curl Corp and now maintained in Version 8 by SCSK of Tokyo.)

The font in this case is 72pt HanaMinA in navy blue on a cornsilk background.

The Curl macros used are simply table, row and cell as in

A few blank cells were used for alignment where no character exists in a given column and are merely

The slash + space gives us a space character rather like a non-breaking blank in HTML.

Shiki hototogisu pun

In 1895 we already have Shiki

水無月の虚空に涼し時鳥

In 1897 the journal 時鳥 is founded (hototogisu).

Thereafter, in the month of no more May showers, under the empty sky, a cool breeze will find us reading the journal.  He may have looked back with amusement at the retrospective pun.

Empty, empty, carried away on a breeze, the unseen bird ( kanji for time + kanji for bird ) - and like Berlin, cool is that of a capital ... and the Kyoto lamp at the gate ... but we find that coolness underground, damp ... and rightly so ... the 3rd memento mori.

Empty, empty, the breeze and seeing the temple clock - a candle ?

I failed to recognize this kanji this morning. Ah - so desu.

TEI Japanese HTML character encoding

Is there any longer a good reason for funded text initiatives on the web NOT to be UTF-8 Unicode ?

TEI at http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/japanese/hyakunin/frames/index/hyaku3euc.html#euc2 has a Japanese poetry page with a click-driven "swiping frames" metaphor - one of which is a view showing the kanji for haiku, waka or tanka in the char-encoding CHARSET=x-euc-jp 

Oi vey!

CHARSET=x-euc-jp ?!? No, not HTML from a server in Kyoto. The server is in VA. In collaboration with academics in PA.

There is an  anti-pattern  documented for this IT phenomenon in projects within organizations exempt from accountability and competitive pressure or managerial consequences ( and perhaps 2 or more anti-patterns specific to this web design and its survival on this academic web site.)

Ah, the peaceful, never over-loaded servers of  e-text  initiatives in academe ! Concurrent user load ? Not a worry.

Masaoka Shiki summer kigo haiku 1896

Here is a screenshot of my Curl applet with over one thousand summer kigo (季語)  haiku {俳句} of Japanese poet Masaoka Shiki ( 正岡 子規 ) from the year 1896, early in his mature period.

The applet has a scrolling tree kigo index, FIND and COPY. The applet in intended as an aid for recognizing kanji through reading haiku.

All kanji habe been converted from SH-JIS to utf-8.

RAIMBAULT ROUILLE et Les 500 kanji (ellipses)

Raimbault and Rouillé in their book Les 500 kanji saw fit to throw in compounds made with kanji which are not found in any of the 3 indices to that book.  Vexing. In one case the font used makes a kanji difficult to make out (for its high price, the printer and typesetter have let down the user.)

Rather than rail against them, I have started some web pages for those who buy the book and run into these not infrequent vexations and a few errors that seem inexcusable for a mere 500 entries for 50$ ( with 1500 often vexing compounds chosen, it seems, on a whim.)

Is that ellipses or elisions ?

Wakan tool kanji tip

So I have copied a Japanese web page to my computer clipboard memory and now I have them displayed in Wakan using the "Character" menu choice for the clipboard content.  How do I now get a copy of any one of those unique and sorted kanji for a text search elsewhere ?

TIP : I display the UNICODE on the Wakan character details so I copy that 4-hex value and enter it into a CTRL-f search at http://kanji.aule-browser.com/henshall-sorted-urlencoded.html and very often get a hit and just copy that kanji from its row.

My next stop now that I have the kanji is often jisho.org

Why not just go to jisho and search by Unicode ? Because if I must do several kanji, I find that having the web page linked above open in a browser tab is simply faster - most often ... and the Henshall number is in plain view.

kanjidic2 scrolling kanji viewer take 2

The scrolling Curl viewer for kanjidic2 kanji (index,kanji,English transl) has been restored at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-all-indexed-curl.html

Use the find field or click in the app and then CTRL-F to search. The alternate mouse button (for me that is the left button) will bring up a context menu if you select text in the app.

I will add an async view with much more content as time and energy permit ( it will load in chunks of content in the background as well jump forward to retrieve and then display a "page" of content.)

At the moment the app does not remember where you were on a past visit.

To clear the app from memory, use the Curl control panel app view button (bottom right on that panel.)

Inter-relating kanji with Japanese syntax and conversational pragmatics is not so obvious in flashcard server software and mobile app as you might think.

Client-side Curl is not the hard part : looking at Mercury for Erlang on the server-side ( as there is no SOUL for Pharo Smalltalk.)

kanji characterizer Firefox plugin

 
I thought this was a cute plugin while learning Japanese kanji : characterizer.

It is no replacement for an edict plugin or for jisho.org but it is fun.  It flips the first letter of a word to a kanji where that string of characters is a dictionary match.  As I said : a dictionary match.

Not advised on a grumpy day, but then it is driven from the menu so is not a nuisance.

Like all such, I installed it on a version of Firefox that I do not use for speed/performance (in my case, generic Firefox.)

I have not tried it with PaleMoon or WaterFox 64-bit Windows builds of the Firefox codebase and I have not tested on Linux (which I use when I am trying to learn or work — as opposed to amuse or relax.)

And I have a new nihongo link for my Aule web homepage.  What ?!? You don't have your own off-line web home page ?  Are you not in the Fredericton e-zone ?!?

Values of R000 above ( a total of 26 ) indicate that the kanji was not found in the book Les 500 Kanji.  One should note that a Japanese newspaper is more likely to have mention of politics and military matters than an introductory reader.

The 100+ Basho haiku mentioning "moon" involve only 376 kanji - and only 45 of those are not in top 3k+ so some reading can be done with a command of only about 500 kanji  — if the compound kanji words formed with some of those 376 are not too obscure or place names ( checked using the Wakan clipboard tool and one of my Basho CURL web pages which also give the poems in hiragana and romaji text. )
